Oscar's Hangover

Posted: Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Hey Gang;

Hope you are all off to a great start to your week.  I must admit, I’m a little weary after taking in a good part of the Academy Awards last night.

Although it’s a long evening to finally get to the big winners, I thought the show was pretty good.  I was surprised at how well Hugh Jackman came off as host of the show…he is a multi-talented guy!

I was happy to see Slumdog Millionaire take home 8 statues, which included best picture.  In my book, (and I’ve seen every nominated movie except “Milk”, which I went to see before the Oscars yesterday but it was sold out!) it was the best choice for best picture.  If you haven’t seen it yet, make sure you take the time to watch a thoroughly entertaining film that will also give you some insight into Indian culture.

It is also a movie that will show you just what the conditions are like for people who live in Mumbai…its unbelievable how some of these children grow up in the over-crowded slums of that city, and others like it.

Karen and I were talking this morning about the pre-Oscar Red Carpet shows.  I tuned in to a couple of them last night (there was one in particular that I couldn’t watch…the one with a former Prime Ministers son hosting…Dude is annoying…I am not a fan!) and was surprised to find what resembled a sporting event rather than an Oscars pre-show.  There was Canadian Jay Manuel with something called the “Glamostrator”…you know how the hockey analysts take a look at plays in between periods and draw on the screen?  It was just like that, only the silver-haired and lovely skinned Jay was using the “glamostrator” to examine the ladies beautiful dresses in great detail!  I’m not kidding!!  Then, on the same show, I saw a wide crowd shot with little super-imposed arrows pointing out where the big stars were located.  It was like watching a Nascar race with the graphics pointing out where the lead drivers were on the track!  Unbelievable!!!  I’m glad they only do that sort of thing once a year…I can’t take the 7 hour lead-up to the Oscar show…its exhausting!

Anyway, as a big fan of the movies, I hope you take the time to check out a few of the better flicks that received awards last night…among my recommendations:  “Slumdog Millionaire”, “The Reader”,  “The Wrestler”…and I’ll let you know what I think of “Milk” once I get through the long lines to see Sean Penn’s Oscar winning performance.

See you at the movies…

Cheers,

Kurt
