JUST Made It!

Posted: Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

A funny thing happened on the way to work this morning.  I arrived at 5:56:30am.  Yes three minutes thirty seconds before the show starts.  Never in my career have I been so close to not making it....here's what transpired.

My husband was up practically all night waiting to pick his parents up at the airport.  They were delayed through Toronto - landed at 3:30am.  That's what time I get up, get ready for work and today I was out the door and in my car by 4:10am - giving myself extra time to get to work because of the snow.  I back up, try to go forward, but the ice underneath the snow is so slick the tires start spinning.  So I back up a little more, go forward, still can't get traction.  None.  Oh dear.  With no husband around and no help I'm stuck - my husband at this point is just paying for parking at the airport - with an hour or so drive to get home.  Yikes!  So I get salt - put it under the tires and call my husband in a semi-state of panic.  What can he do?  Nothing.  Neither can I.  In a moment of bravado I think I can push the car just to get it going.  Yeah right.  And so I wait for the salt to work it's magic and get me to work on time.  Nope, doesn't happen.  So I call my producer and tell her I'm in a bit of a situation.  As soon as my husband pulled into the driveway at 5:07am I took his car and took off.  Didn't even have a chance to welcome, kiss and hug the in-laws.  My drive in is usually 35 minutes.  Do the math - with the road conditions not ideal - will I make it?  I was bound and determined to do so, staying within a reasonable speed limit and keeping my producer apprised of where I was.  Forget about Santa's NORAD tracker today, our crew was on the Karen tracker!

As I watch the clock and keep my eyes on the road my nerves are starting to take a bit of a hit - but I make it!  Whew.  Now I have to drive home.

Safe travels if you're heading out - Merry Christmas and we'll see you on Monday December 29th.  No shows on Christmas Day or Boxing Day and then it's the weekend.

Cheers,
Karen
