Cash Crunch

Posted: Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The front page story on the front of the Ottawa Sun is really discouraging.  The Community Foundation of Ottawa won't be able to hand out any grants next year for organizations in need.  Places like the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.  The stock market turmoil has left them with capital only, which they can't donate.  A tough announcement for the foundation's board given the history of its generosity.  Other charities are going to be seeing shortfalls on donations, so if you can this season - help out where you can.

This leads me to gift giving.  We're all going over our planned Christmas spending for gifts, food, decorations, etc. and for the first time in 26 years consumer confidence is at an all time low.  Bad news for retailers especially this time of year.  I don't want to take away from the importance of the retail industry to keep the economy humming, but is spending less on Christmas gifts such a bad thing?  I've said numerous times before that the whole meaning of Christmas has been lost in giving the biggest and best gifts and making sure everyone on your list has been taken care of.  How about taking care of gift recipients on a smaller scale and focusing on family and friends and a good meal.  For some, even that good meal is going to be an extreme challenge this year.

I'm not a scrooge I just believe there's too much emphasis on spend, spend, spend.  So I leave you with this motto - buy less but buy local.  You'll do your finances a favour along with the local business community.

Cheers,
Karen
